The first of the three great fires of the Middle Ages in Chartres occurred in 1020. A great deal of timber was used in the construction of churches at this time and therefore fires were very common.
Most of the cathedral was completely destroyed in the fire of 1020. Fulbert devoted his learning and time to rebuilding the cathedral, creating a far larger and more magnificent building than before. Gifts came from kings of Europe in response to Fulbert's letters, asking for support. King Canute of England gave generously, as did William V, the Duke of Aquitaine and Richard Duke of Normandy. Another donor was Eudes, the Count of Chartres.
In 1134 there was another fire, less destructive than the first, which burnt the western porch and the adjoining [G 04 / belfry]. Building continued throughout the 12th century. It was during this period that some of the most beautiful windows were added, the famous royal [G 24 / portal], and the south tower and spire.
